【Hardcore Gadget Geek's Review】Garmin Forerunner 70 Review: JPY 39,800, 40g and About 13 Days Per Charge, a First Running Watch
The Garmin Forerunner 70 puts a 1.2-inch AMOLED screen and about 13 days of smartwatch battery into a 40g body. It went on sale May 28, 2026 at JPY 39,800 (tax included). It is my pick for a first Garmin.
Key points
- Release date: May 28, 2026. JPY 39,800 tax included (the Forerunner 170 above it is JPY 47,800)
- 40g and 5ATM water resistance. About 13 days as a smartwatch, about 23 hours with GPS on
- A Garmin coach and quick workouts for beginners. Sleep score and Body Battery are included
[Released May 28, 2026] Garmin Forerunner 70
The Forerunner 70 is a light, long-lasting running watch: 40g, about 13 days
A common reason people give up on running watches is nightly charging. The Forerunner 70 lasts about 13 days as a smartwatch.
The body is 40g. Garmin says the 1.2-inch AMOLED screen is easy to read in sunlight. With 5ATM water resistance, it handles sweat.
As an IT consultant (SE), I read the footnote before the headline number. The 13 days is the "smartwatch mode" figure, and with GPS running the whole time it is about 23 hours. I read the two separately.
How I judged it
First, battery days. About 13 days is 3 days more than the 170's 10 (about 23%). If you run three times a week, charging every two weeks is enough.
Next, weight. 40g against 41g is a 1g gap, almost nothing. For a watch you wear long hours, screen visibility and battery days count more than the number.
If you can't decide, take the Forerunner 70. The reason: about 13 days for JPY 39,800, with beginner coaching included.

The two share nearly the same screen and running metrics. The 170 is the model where you pay JPY 8,000 for Suica payment and sensors such as an altimeter.
For music too, the JPY 55,800 170 Music exists.
Strengths and things to note
Strengths
The battery lasts. About 13 days as a smartwatch, with a bright AMOLED screen. For a device you wear daily, that is a big strength.
Friendly to beginners. A beginner Garmin coach and quick workouts, where you pick two or three options, get you running right away.
Things to note
Garmin lists Suica payment as a 170 feature. If you want it on the 70, check first. With GPS on the whole time it lasts about 23 hours, which is short for very long ultra-distance efforts.
Who is it for?
People looking for a first running watch. People who want sleep and heart rate logged every day without taking it off. It also suits anyone who wants to charge once every two weeks.
If you want to tap through ticket gates mid-run or you run hills, the 170 is another way to choose.
Price and where to buy
JPY 39,800 tax included, sold at Garmin's Rakuten store and others. Over three years that is about JPY 36 a day (39,800 ÷ 1,095).
If you can't decide, take the Forerunner 70. The reason: about 13 days for JPY 39,800 at only 40g.
